Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS HOMEWOOD?

Homewood is a wedding and events venue in a beautifully restored 1920s stone manor in Asheville's post-Victorian historic district of Montford, less than a mile from downtown.

IS HOMEWOOD AN ALL-INCLUSIVE VENUE?

Yes! Homewood offers customizable packages as well as all-inclusive options.

WHERE ARE THE CEREMONIES HELD?

Homewood’s Garden Ceremony Site is nestled in the lush adjacent garden amid a quiet neighborhood setting, with surrounding grounds providing space for an outdoor cocktail hour.

Indoor ceremonies are held in front of the Grand Appalachian Stone Fireplace in the classic Great Room featuring original hardwood floors, cherry walls, alabaster sconces, and luminous wrought iron chandeliers casting graceful lighting from the 20-foot ceilings.

WHAT SIZE EVENT CAN I HAVE?

Receptions & weddings of all sizes and styles are held throughout the space, utilizing the iconic Great Room, Study and Foyers, and flowing outdoors to the surrounding grounds. The Great Room is Homewood's main dining area, and measures 1500 square feet. The Great Room comfortably provides space for dinner seating for just over 110 people, with room for dance floor and setup for your DJ or band. With a heavy hors d’oeuvres menu and cocktail seating, we can accommodate up to about 150 people inside Homewood.

WHAT IS THE ESTIMATED OVERALL COST OF A HOMEWOOD WEDDING?

We will create a comprehensive estimate of your overall costs upon request. We work closely with you and your vendors to curate your event to your ideal style and price range. The possibilities are endless!

DO YOU HAVE A REQUIRED PLANNER?

Yes, our required in-house coordinator is Nikki Sciurba with Carolina Love Events (CLE). We have entrusted Nikki’s team with our events because they are that good! CLE works every event at Homewood, thus has unparalleled experience and an intimate understanding of the flow and function of the space, and has built solid working relationships with our vendors. Clients who have already secured an outside planner may absolutely continue to work with them in conjunction with CLE.

ARE YOU A SAFE SPACE FOR LGBTQ+ WEDDINGS?

Yes, we are (though we just call them weddings)!

As of October 15th, 2014 the State of North Carolina recognizes weddings of couples any gender. To Homewood, marriage has always been about the uniting of two loving individuals. A wedding is a moment to mark this life event.

Monroe Moore, the owner of Homewood, is an active advocate for equality. He has worked with Campaign for Southern Equality in North Carolina and was showcased with his family on a CBS Sunday Morning segment as a loving gay family.

CAN I ELOPE AT HOMEWOOD?

Yes! We welcome couples who are seeking to simplify their wedding experience with a ceremony-only event, or who want a beautiful and romantic location for their wedding, and have alternate plans for the celebration to follow. Homewood offers ceremony-only events in the mornings, unless otherwise approved by Homewood.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF HOMEWOOD?

In 1904, Dr. Robert Carole came to Asheville from Duke University to build Highland Hospital. In 1927, Homewood was built as Dr. Carole's private home. The English Stone Manor design was influenced heavily by Dr. Carole's time at Duke University. In time, additions were made to the main house, which included a 1,500 square foot piano room, now known as the Great Room, wrapped with cherry walls, and a stone turret.

Montford was developing as a post-Victorian neighborhood during the 1920s, with architects such as Richard Sharpe Smith, the supervising architect of the Biltmore House, designing homes.

Dr. Carole and his wife, Grace Potter Carole, who had toured Europe as a concert pianist, brought the renowned composer Bela Bartok to Asheville. Bartok gave private concerts in the elegant piano room. F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, the Vanderbilts and others would be entertained by Bartok at Homewood. Later in the 1940's, Mrs. Carole taught piano lessons to Nina Simone at Homewood. Ms. Simone would be driven up from South Carolina by her mother specifically for the occasions.

Dr. Carole referred to his home in Montford as his Beloved Homewood.

WHAT OTHER VENDORS AM I REQUIRED TO USE?

You may use the vendors of your choice otherwise. We provide you with an array of our recommended and vendor partners on this website. We feel confident that these showcased vendors will do an excellent job for you, and work with you to manifest your particular vision for your special day.

WHO CAN HELP ME WITH BLOCKING ROOMS?

If you have family and friends coming into town for your event and would like a group of rooms held so your guests can lodge at the same hotel, you will want to block rooms. A hotel will block up to 10 or 15 rooms for you, then add more as the first set of blocked rooms book.

Asheville’s Chamber of Commerce is closely connected to the wedding industry. Their Conventions and Visitors Bureau (CVB) offers a service to assist visitors with blocking rooms. Couples can visit the CVB’s room blocking page to set up room blocks, or reach out to Khal Khoury, the CVB manager, to help with room blocking and related requests. You can reach Khal at kkhoury@exploreasheville.com or 828.258.6139.

WHEN CAN I HOLD MY WEDDING REHEARSAL?

A 1-hour wedding rehearsal is included with most Homewood wedding packages. Our coordinator, Carolina Love Events, will book your rehearsal for you two months prior to your wedding date. There is no charge to hold a rehearsal the day prior to your booked Homewood wedding, provided the rehearsal ends before 5:00pm. If Homewood can accommodate a rehearsal after 5:00pm, the fee is $60 per hour. Rehearsals will always be scheduled around booked events.

MAY I DO A PHOTOSHOOT AT HOMEWOOD?

You may schedule a photo shoot at Homewood at no cost if you have booked your wedding with us, provided the photo shoot is booked during regular business hours and there are no conflicts. If we are not scheduled to be in the office at your requested date and time, there will be a $75 per hour charge. Photo shoots will always be scheduled around booked events.
